Museum Mentor Project
A Scaning mobile application
Problem
Museums and galleries were looking to increase satisfaction from guests when viewing art. Most people do not do research prior to visiting the museum and those that look up information on the spot feel overwhelmed by the amount of information they find.
Solution
I created a scanning app where the user scans either the art or the plaque next to the piece and is presented with bite-size pieces of information about the art, artist, and technique used. The user can choose to listen to the information or read it depending on their preference.
Final Thoughts
The application addresses the needs of both users and museums. In testing, users were able to quickly complete their tasks and learned something new about the example painting in the process. Showing that with a little bit of content (8 sentences) people can broaden their horizons on a piece of art. An important line of inquiry for the future would be to see if museum visitors equate learning more about the art with a more satisfying visit.
